Pierre-Yves Guenec

Formally trained in metalsmithing, Pierre Yves Guenec's design practice is deeply informed by his appreciation and educated knowledge of the traditional crafts. Born in Nantes, France, in 1990, Guenec was one of the carefully selected contemporary artisans to undergo studies at the esteemed French school of master-craftsmanship, Les Compagnons du Devoir.

Inspired by the artistic environment in which he grew up, Guenec completed his education at the Ateliers de Sevres and furthered his studies at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts before learning the applied arts and affiliated time-honored techniques at Les Compagnons du Devoir school. As part of the institution’s graduation program, Guenec completed his graduation with a two-year apprenticeship tour, working under revered master-craftsmen and mentors across Europe. As an apprentice, Guenec immersed himself in the realms of furniture design and decorative arts, collaborating with skilled craftsmen across diverse countries, mediums of expertise, and cultures. This experience provided him with a comprehensive understanding of various trades and practices.

In 2016, Guenec joined the master-artisans team of Les Ateliers Saint Jacques, a non-profit cooperative of traditional workshops located outside of Paris, in the domain of Château de Coubertin. Over six years of working alongside the revered art founders of Fonderie de Coubertin, Guenec showcased his versatility and deepened his expertise through collaborations with the foundry’s neighboring stone workshop. Introduced to the gallery through Editions Courbet, he collaborated with Raphael Navot on the Topographic Memories collection, standing out for his commitment to bridging the gap between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design.

In 2022, after leaving Ateliers Saint Jacques, Pierre Yves Guenec established his own studio between Paris and New York. Embracing a multidisciplinary approach, the studio explores built environments from a spiritual perspective, transforming materials to reveal their inherent beauty. Guenec's artistic approach integrates centuries-old traditions with contemporary designs, with a focus on collaborating directly with master artisans. Each collection bears the co-signature of both the artist and the craftsmen, reflecting Guenec's dedication to honoring time-honored craftsmanship.
