Gianluca Pacchioni | Listening to Stone

06.16.2023 - 08.25.2023

An homage to the unique character of natural materials,  Listening to Stone features four new marble tables by esteemed Milanese artist Gianluca Pacchioni. Masterfully crafted in collaboration with local artisans, Pacchioni seamlessly blends his contemporary artistic language with age-old techniques, aesthetic traditions, and allusions. With an ethereal harmony achieved by a weighty stone delicately perched upon slender bronze legs, the forms themselves exude an almost fantastical quality. One cannot help but feel that these creations belong to another era or an entirely different realm altogether.

In Listening to Stone, Pacchioni's artistic vision takes shape and embodies his poetic approach to sculpture in which the organic matter itself guides the final form of each piece. Informed by the time he spent in the lush landscapes of East Africa and the formative years of his artistic career in Paris, the Milanese sculptor often begins his creative process with the raw materials he sources. Scouring the world's quarries for rare blocks of stone, Pacchioni first listens to the mineral matter, observes its idiosyncrasies, and appreciates its character.Years of experimentation and devoted practice have led Pacchioni to hone his ability to manipulate metal, achieving true mastery over the medium and its intrinsic properties. Reveling in the interplay of contrasting elements, he expertly juxtaposes the raw and refined, the rugged and delicate, the weighty and ethereal, the polished and weathered.

The Cremino series exemplifies the artist and his vocabulary as he taps into the materiality of the stone, ripping the solid rock open and amplifying it by setting it on sheer, slender bronze legs, reminiscent of a rough diamond stone set on a ring. Seemingly levitating atop the thin yet solid cast-bronze structures, rare Patagonia marble and Cloud Onyx inspired the artist's latest Cremino series, expanding upon his signature series. Alongside new pieces from Pacchioni's iconic Cremino and Cusi series, the artist will unveil his newest series 'Under the Sheets' in the US—his latest console sculpture created as an homage to his beloved wife. Inspired by the curves of his wife’s silhouette outlined by the morning sun piercing through the window of their bedroom, Pacchioni sculpts soft, dune-like curves on the top surface of the rounded stone table. Each of the artist’s pieces reflects his lyrical approach to sculpture and his passion for the natural material, its essence, and personality.

" ‘Listening to Stone’ is a gateway to another world. These stones encapsulate the millions of years of crystallization of minerals and silica from times unknown to us. What was once submerged now affords a glimpse of the geological eras of our planet, almost like an ancestral time machine taking us back to our most ancient history. In which each era, each century, each decade and each day, left the mark of its passing." – Gianluca Pacchioni
